The Zixiao Palace is one of the most complete and largest palaces within the Wudang Mountain Taoist complex. In 1982, it was designated as a key national cultural relic protection unit by the State Council.
Why was it called the Zixiao Palace? Zixiao symbolized the Purple Micro Star constellation in the heaven, where the emperor resided, thus, the Zixiao Palace meant the purple altar at the center of heaven and earth. It was initially built during the Northern Song Dynasty's Xuanhe period (1119-1125 AD), rebuilt during the Yuan Dynasty, and named the Zixiao Yuansheng Palace. After being destroyed in warfare, it was rebuilt in the tenth year of the Yongle period of the Ming Dynasty (1412 AD) and was granted the name the Taixuan Zixiao Palace.

Plus, it boasts Lei Shen Cave on the right and Penglai Peak on the left. The surrounding mountains form a shape reminiscent of "two dragons playing with pearls," creating a perfect Feng Shui treasure land, thus has been hailed as Zixiao Blessed Land and Yunwai Qingdu, namely a place of earthly tranquility beyond the Clouds.

The Zixiao Palace's architectural style merges the ethereal nature of Taoism with the solemnity of royalty, every brick and tile reflecting the wisdom and craftsmanship of ancient craftsmen.

The ridge of the hall is adorned with glazed tiles shaped like flying birds and running beasts. At both ends of the ridge peak, there are decorative auspicious mythological figures called "chiwen" that appear to swallow the ridge with the anticipation of warding off evil spirits and preventing fires. The ridge itself is composed of six three-colored glazed flying dragons, with a gilded vase positioned in the center. The craftsmen smartly designed four iron chains for support, with the other ends tied to the hands of four children. This Ming Dynasty palace-style construction embodies mechanical principles in a dynamic form.
The eaves of the roof curl upward, resembling a phoenix in full swing ready to soar, and showcase the ancient pursuit of ideology of the unity of heaven and man.

A Dougong is a complex bracket set that extends outside to allow a wide eave or porch and connects the roof and pillar, bearing the load of upper structure, and transferring it to the lower columns. The structure of Dougong bracket sets in the Zixiao Palace is the essence of its architectural art. The upper eaves feature 56 sets of Dougong brackets with three projections on a single -eave and double-ridge, while the lower eaves consist of 72 sets of gilded Dougong brackets with two projections on a double-ridge.
Every blade of grass and tree and every stele and stone here seem to convey the profundity and mystery of Taoist culture. As Laozi said, "The Dao that can be told is not the eternal Dao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name." Here, the perfect fusion of Taoist culture and architectural aesthetics fully reflects the ancients' pursuit of the philosophical ideology of the unity of heaven and man.

It’s the Supreme Harmony that can be called Taihe, which is the path of auspiciousness, conducive to the growth of all things.
